A young organic farmer from Michigan
by Nora
We are spending a couple of days close to the capital of hand-shaped Michigan, in Lansing: 100 miles away from Detroit. The idea is to get started. In other words, get a car. Today you need connections when you don’t want to spend more than $3,000 and get something that actually runs. Nora’s boyfriend lives in Okemos and his family and friends helped us figure out which poker face to wear when playing with Michigan’s car dealers. Along the way we got to drive through the area more, and we ended up discovering a very special program. This young bearded lad pictured above works during Summer at the organic farm of MSU (notice the tattoo on his left leg). A lot of the urban farming initiatives that are now happening in Detroit are partly nurtured here; the “AgBio Research” program is one of the most forward-thinking in the country. The farm also has a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program; the members go pick a selection of fresh organic vegetables each week, for a decent price.
